Closet cleanouts can feel like an emotional rollercoaster. You’re holding onto that dress from 2017 that kind of fits but no longer makes you feel like the baddie you are. Or that blazer that used to fit, but now it’s a struggle to button. The tears, the indecision, the I might need this in the future moments—no thank you.
Here’s the process that got me through my closet cleanouts without feeling like I’m drowning in shame and regret. (Because you can let go and level up.)
Step 1: Set the Vibe
If I’m not in the right mood, we’re not doing this. I light a candle, put on my most empowering playlist (think: “Boss Bitch” by Doja Cat, not “Tears Dry on Their Own” by Amy Winehouse), and make it fun. Yes, it’s a purge, but it’s also a glow-up ritual.
Step 2: Visualize the End Goal
Before I dive in, I think about the closet I actually want. This isn’t about getting rid of everything—it’s about creating a wardrobe that makes me feel sexy, powerful, and confident. So I look at my favorite pieces and ask myself: “Does this reflect my highest self? Will this make me feel like a total baddie when I wear it?” Anything that doesn't fit that vibe? It goes.
Step 3: The Three-Pile System
I don’t do a one-pile mess and pray for clarity. I have three distinct piles:
- Keep: I LOVE it. It fits. It makes me feel like my best self.
- Donate: It’s still good, but it’s not my vibe anymore. Someone else is about to slay in this.
- Toss: If it’s damaged or truly outdated, it’s time for it to go to the bin.
I keep it simple and ruthless—no holding onto things "just in case."
Step 4: Try It On (No, Seriously)
If I’m even questioning whether a piece works, I try it on right then and there. The truth always comes out in the mirror. And if I’m not feeling it, I don’t keep it. I don’t want things in my closet that make me question my decisions every time I see them. Goodbye, awkward regrets.
Step 5: One-in, One-out Rule
For every new piece I buy (and I do love a new addition), something has to go. That way, my closet stays curated, and I don’t get overwhelmed. Quality over quantity, always. Plus, it helps me avoid closet chaos and unnecessary clutter.
Step 6: Get Organized
Once the cleanout is done, I organize everything by color and type. I even fold my sweats into cute stacks—don’t judge me, it’s a vibe. I make sure everything has its place and is easy to grab in the mornings when I’m rushing out the door. No more stress. Only easy, breezy mornings with outfits that make me feel like I’m stepping into my dream life.
Step 7: Celebrate the Glow-Up
When it’s all said and done, I stand back and admire my new closet. I might sip some bubbly, maybe treat myself to a new bag to celebrate the transformation. (Because, hello, a hot girl’s gotta reward herself for getting rid of the old.)
So there you have it. Closet cleanouts don’t have to be a chaotic, tear-filled mess. They can be a way to let go of what no longer serves you and make space for the new, the exciting, and the you that’s constantly leveling up.
